    I've fitted this exact tacho to a 2004 Sportster and intermittently it flicks to double rpm. Mostly reads correct but then sometimes reads double. I soldered to the coil wires and used the diode and resistor circuit. My earth wire is to the earth on the lighting harness for the pilot bulb. Any idea what could be wrong?

    • @CarlRecktenwaldJr
      @CarlRecktenwaldJr 2 місяці тому

      Has it always done that flickering? If it just started it might be the diode or resistor going bad.

    • @tokairic3925

      @@CarlRecktenwaldJr I have only just fitted the tacho so everything is new. It was fine for a few miles then I noticed it would sometimes read correct and sometimes double rpm. I think maybe the resistors are letting some intermittent continuity between the two coil wires making the tach behave like it has two dual fire coils connected. What are the resistors for? Could I just run with the diodes?

    • @tokairic3925
      @tokairic3925 2 місяці тому

      So now I've tried using just the diodes without the resistors but no reading at all on the taco. I refitted a pair of 100k resistors across the diodes and tried again. Up to now its reading what seems like correctly, but may be a bit low. I'll see how it goes when I ride it again...... I read on one of the forums that the crank position sensor can trick the ecu into behaving like a dual fire on start up if the ecu doesn't read it correctly. Don't think there will be a cure for that.

    Hi there great video... just had a couple of questions if that's ok... 1. The x2 cables that you connected the Resistor and Diod to, are they power supply to Ignition Coil Front and Rear? 2. The Ground wire that you mentioned which is linked to the back of bolt that passes through the Ignition Coil Mount, I presume the other end of this cable is coming from Tachometer? I have a 2013 XL883L Sportster and am looking to install a LCD Digital Multifunctional Speedometer from China...the interesting thing is that on the Speedometer you have to select the number of Cylinders on the Bike? Im from London, UK any advice would be much appreciated before i get stuck into this project... Thanks and season greetings...😊

    My Battery Tender Junior Smart Battery Charger is not charging even though it still shows that everything is fine. If I disconnect one of the charging lines, the LED indicator would flash red light indicating it's not hooked up properly. If all lines are hooked up correctly it shows charging with a solid red indicator. But the charge never turned green, or flashing green, even after a week on an originally 75% charged battery showing 12.45V from the beginning. I hooked up a multimeter and it shows 0 charging current. Any idea on what may be wrong with the unit?

    Hi Carl, I am looking for a cheap way to charge my motorcycle by powering the Battery Tender with an old 12v car battery, rather than 120VAC. I know the "Optimate TM-500" is a DC to DC charger that will do this, but it costs over $100, but these battery tenders are cheap. Based on your teardown, is there any area on this board where I could supply a 12.5V (fused) from the old car battery to make a DIY DC to DC charger? Do you know what the output voltage of the transformer is? Thanks!

    • @CarlRecktenwaldJr
      @CarlRecktenwaldJr Рік тому

      I think the output of the transformer is around 18 volts ac. I don’t see how an old car battery would works as the tender voltage starts at about 14 volts dc and then maintains at about 13.5. You would need some kind of booster circuit.

I wrote an email to Deltran asking them why one was heavier than the other and their response was "The older unit has a transformer in it and the newer one does not." "The newer unit is more efficient and can be used in Oregon and California". That's exactly what they told me🤷🏻‍♂️. To make the Iron get hotter, turn the Left potentiometer on the board counter clockwise. This tricks it into thinking the iron is not as hot as its supposed to be so it heats it up more (even though the readout will still max at 842, the tip will get significantly hotter than before).
